summer party for new Freshmen.
This years sendoff was held Wednesday,

Ocean View. The Chapter has a supportive tradition for all our South Jersey Shore
students and strives to keep in touch with them through their years at Penn State.
Parents of Freshmen and upperclassmen are encouraged to
keep the club updated on any news about their students and all are invited to Chapter Tail
Gate gatherings on Game Saturdays at University Park.

High School were honored at the South Jersey Shore Chapter Dinner in Vineland June 7th.

Two Penn State scholarships were awarded by the
South Jersey Shore Chapter during the groups annual Dinner in June.
Michael Jones of Millville High School was the
winner of the Ray Willett Scholarship and Seth Cooper of Ocean City High School received
the 1998 Jon Beattie Scholarship. This marks the 14th year for scholarships by our South
Jersey Shore Chapter.
Michael Jones graduated this year
from Millville High School with GPA of 4.0 and plans to major in meteorology. His parents
are Michalina and William Jones of Millville. His Penn State connections include an uncle
that graduated in 75 and a cousin in the Class of 2000.
Seth Cooper graduated in June from Ocean City High School and plans

State has been a common thread in his life with both his mother and father graduating from
PSU in 72 and 71. Seths grandfathers also were affiliated with Penn State.
Ginnys father was head of the Landscape Architecture Dept. and Ralphs dad was
an undergraduate at Penn State. Seth attended his cousins graduation from the Smeal
Business School at Penn State in May. And as one final link, Seths guidance
counselor at OCHS was Denise Dalton, a Penn State grad and member of our Chapter.

Guest speaker: Dr. Richard Nelson
Richard
C. Nelson, founding director of the internationally known Biomechanics Laboratory at Penn
State, was the guest speaker. His facility's research and educational programs have
focused on improving performance and reducing injury in sports and everyday activities.
Since 1967, a total of thirty-nine doctoral students and sixty-two masters degree
students have completed their work in this pioneering program at Penn State..
Nelson was appointed to the Medical Commission of the
International Olympic Committee in 1984 and has conducted biomechanical studies of Olympic
athletes during the last six Olympic Games.
In recent years, Nelson has become increasingly involved as an
expert witness in personal injury and product-liability cases. His slide presentation,

Keep In Touch @ PSU
If you are a Penn State student or parent of a student, we need his/her current
address at PSU so we can send cards and info from our SJS chapter. We have maintained this
tradition over the years and wouldn't want anyone's son or daughter to miss out on this
personal touch.
