SJS Chapter member Ralph Cooper with Professor Sophia McClennen at the Huddle with the Faculty held Saturday, Sept.14, 2013.  Now in its 21st year, Huddle with the Faculty is held on  fall football Saturdays.  Alumni and friends can learn about timely topics by the best and brightest at Penn State.  This year’s free Huddle with the Faculty lectures feature such wide-ranging topics as the accomplishments of Penn State’s early presidents, the role of satire in democracy and the health of polar ice sheets.  Sept. 14 lecture topic: “Can Satire Save Democracy? Chapter Tailgating for all 2013 Football home games at University Park.
Join our South Jersey Shore Chapter for tailgating at every home game this year. Meet up with us the space # 481, located along the right-field side of the "Spikes" Baseball Field, just across the street from Beaver Stadium. The motor home is parked and ready at the site by 9 am of each game day. We'll see you in Happy Valley ...for every Penn State Home game.

   - Chapter 2014 Membership and Scholarship Fund forms are posted here.
     Renewal and contribution requests will be emailed/mailed in the near future.

Chapter Scholarship Winners Announced
 
The Penn State South Jersey Shore Alumni Chapter’s 2013 Scholarship winners were announced during this month’s Freshmen Sendoff gathering. Mackenzie Goddard, above, received the Ray Willett award from Bruce Engle, Chairperson of the Chapter Scholarship Committee. Katelyn McCormick, right, received the Jon Beattie scholarship from Al Beattie.

9th Annual War on the Shore - annual THON fundraiser in Avalon.

Penn State SJS Chapter Board member Ralph Cooper participated in the annual War on the Shore THON fundraiser, held in Avalon in August 2013. The 9th annual event raised over $54,000 and was attended by several hundred. Pictured with Ralph is Adam Taliaferro, above and Jay Paterno, below.

9th Annual War on the Shore - Saturday, Aug. 3rd, is the annual THON fundraiser in Avalon. While our Chapter is not directly involved, some members attend and we wanted to share the details here.

Key Information:
 - What: 9th Annual War on the Shore
 - When: Saturday August 3, 2013, 5:00 pm
 - Where: Jack's Place, 3601 Ocean Drive, Avalon, NJ
 - Cost: $60, payable at the door or online (see below). All proceeds go directly to THON!
Entertainment: LongMiles and DJ Jay Weiss
 - Food: Catering by Pappy's BBQ of Marmora/Ocean City NJ

This will be the 9th War on the Shore!  Last year the event raised $33,000!  The 8 year total is now up to over $152,000. The goal for 2013 is $50,000, which won't be easy without help from everyone!  See 9th Annual Promo Video with Jay Paterno and others.

Plans are still being developed to hopefully hold the Chapter Scholarship dinner mid-June 2013. There's been difficulty scheduling a potential speaker from Penn State.  However, the review of ten scholarship applications for this year is currently underway by the Scholarship Committee.  Details on both the dinner and the announcement of the scholarship winners will be available here in the coming weeks.

Penn State SJS Alumni Chapter
Supports Jersey Shore Science Fair
The Jersey Shore Science Fair will be held at the Richard Stockton College on Saturday, March 16, 2013. One of our Penn State Chapter members has been involved in the judging of this fair for many years now and feels it provides a great benefit for the students. Many of the judges are from the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center Community and a cross section of Atlantic County and the South Jersey region.

The volunteer time for the judges is approximately 4-5 hours in the morning of March 16th. If you are interested in helping out with the fair please go to www.JSSF.us  to complete an online judges application. If you are a returning judge, please also visit www.JSSF.us  and complete the online judges registration form. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me and I will do my best to answer them or direct you to the person who can.

The 2013 Penn State Accepted Student Program will held in March. The date and location are to be determined.  The  Penn State South Jersey Shore Chapter hosts this annual gathering to provide information and insight about the University.
